The Goal: To capture, and preserve the living history of regional sport and community connection for the "Bounce!" exhibition, transforming historical accounts into deeply engaging first-person digital narratives.
The Challenge: Museum sporting exhibitions often rely heavily on static team photographs, rusted trophies and lists of scores, which can fail to capture the diverse cultural contributions and raw human emotion behind the games. For the story of Souths Rugby League (“The Magpies”) and local legend Rex Eggmolesse, the council required a digital asset that could bridge complex family histories — spanning South Sea Islander heritage, systemic segregation and national service — with the joyful, unifying spirit of local sport, all while meeting rigorous museum and library archival standards.
The Solution: We produced an intimate, first-person oral history documentary featuring Rex Eggmolesse, filmed in a comfortable environment with a minimal, non-intrusive footprint. We crafted simple, open-ended prompts that gave Rex’s character the room to breathe, allowing him to navigate deep historical truths naturally — from his grandfather’s arrival from the Pacific Islands and early Black land ownership in Bli Bli, to the legendary 1974 representative victory. By prioritising pristine audio clarity and a clean, organic edit in post-production, we stepped back to let Rex’s authentic voice remain at the forefront: his memories of singing at dances to fund local clubs, and his spontaneous performance of the old dressing room team song.
The Result: The resulting digital story, Bounce! Prop Singer, serves as an emotional anchor for the Landsborough Museum’s physical exhibition and the broader Grassroots to Glory digital series. By preserving the rare history of early cane-cutter sports teams and the unifying power of music, the film recontextualises static artefacts into a living cultural legacy that connects with lifelong locals and new generations of museum visitors alike.
Achievements: The story was integrated into interactive museum kiosks, shared online and added to permanent digital collections. It shows how regional councils can build a long-term cultural and historical runway, ensuring the community’s foundational grassroots stories are permanently secured and celebrated as the region moves toward the Brisbane Olympics.
